When can my coverage go into effect?

In order to apply for Individual Health Insurance in NJ, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  1. Your primary residence must be in New Jersey, and you must be present in NJ for at least six months of the year in order to be eligible for a NJ Individual Health Plan. These residency requirements do not apply to dependents (who are enrolled as such).
  2. You and any family members who wish to be covered must not be eligible for coverage under a Group Health Plan, Group Benefits Plan, Governmental Plan, Church Plan or Medicare.
  3. Children may be eligible for individual health insurance coverage as dependents under your plan until their 19th birthday. Dependents who are incapacitated may be covered indefinitely, as long as they can provide sufficient documentation to the insurer and your coverage remains in effect.
  4. Children who are full-time students in an accredited school may be covered as dependents until their 23rd birthday. Coverage will end sooner if the child graduates, marries or is otherwise no longer a full-time student for any reason.
  5. Children who do not meet the eligibility requirements for individual health insurance coverage as a dependent may be eligible to enroll under their own Single Contract as the Applicant/Policyholder, provided that they meet all other eligibility requirements as stated above.
